Mystery actor

[Click either image for a larger view.]

The sunglasses make him look a lot like George Shearing, but I think he’s still recognizably himself, sort of. What do you think?

Leave a guess, or several, in the comments. I’ll drop a hint if it might help.

*

A hint: In a long career, this actor played a writer, scientist, inventor, statesman, diplomat, printer, publisher, and political philosopher. Also a bartender.

*

It’s a tough one. The name is now in the comments, but you’re still welcome to guess.

I’m not sure who that is, but it’s not him.

Alan Hewitt or Herb Edelman? Hmmm. Maybe not. I'm thinking I've seen this person in a guest role on Murder She Wrote.

I’ll reveal, via this screenshot, whose URL ends with the actor’s name.

He appears here in The Underworld Story (dir. Cyril Endfield, 1950). The clue references 1776 (as Ben Franklin, he was, as Wikipedia describes him, all those things) and The Lost Weekend.

That cleft chin reminds me of several actors: maybe Kirk Douglas?

Bartender, The Lost Weekend, Howard Da Silva?

I came back because I dreamed of this guy last night - I thought it might be the Maytag repairman. I see, however, that I am wrong again. :)

There’s a resemblance!

We bought a Maytag washing machine a couple of weeks ago. I’ll let you know if Jesse White shows up here.

My first thought was also Jesse White as with The Crow. I just couldn’t quite picture an older White being this guy as a younger man.My guess of Carroll O’Connor was formed after zooming on the forehead and comparing the hair with what I remember of O’Connor’s..
