Proust for two

If I were CNN, this post would begin, “We are now less than ten minutes away from the start of.”

And if I were Rocky and Bullwinkle, this post would continue, “In Search of Lost Time, or That’s the Way the Cookie Crumbles.”

The ascent of Mount Proust is the Four Seasons Reading Club’s greatest challenge to date. Wish us well.

What are you saying? Your book club is starting Proust? Last night, as we lay in the dark on the way to slumber, my wife and I continued a discussion prompted by an earlier glance of "A Christmas Carol" on the tube about Dickens and his amazing descriptive prose, of which she is particularly fond. Her preference for Joyce already established, I asked if she had ever read perhaps the most famous of descriptive novels, "In Search of Lost Time". On went the cell phone, "Oh my God, it's 4200 pages over 7 volumes." "Yes, but nobody ever reads more than the first two or three. Or, the first one really." "Hmmm.... oh this is gorgeous." Then I fell asleep.

“For a long time, I went to bed early.” :)

The club is my wife and me, reading in tandem since I retired from teaching. I love Ulysses, but I’ve found that Proust the greatest reading experience of my life. Third time for me. And I’ll admit to having sometimes fallen asleep while reading — there are stretches that are a slog. But that’s a mountain for ya.

I'm looking forward to your extracts of the good bits...
Though they could take over the whole blog, eh?

The boxed set of three volumes came in the store last week--
well worn, so I priced it low ($9), and it sold immediately.
Maybe people just like to have it on their shelves?
But I do know many people who love it--such as your good self.
Enjoy round 3.

I am going to bed too early to take it on... :)

I used to see the edition I think you mean — silver and black — all the time in bookstores. But it never spoke to me.

I was thinking of posting a sentence per installment of reading. I did that many years ago, and I’m wondering if I’ll end up picking some of the same sentences. Remembrance of sentences past!

Yes--that's the one--silver & black.
(A bit heavy to hold and read, I'd think...)

I'd like a sentence per installment.
Then I could tell people I'm reading Proust! :)

Yep, I looked it up. That’s the Moncrieff and Kilmartin. First sentence coming soon.
