Today’s Newsday Saturday Stumper, by Lester Ruff, is pretty easy. Pretty, pretty easy. It starts with a giveaway, 1-Across, thirteen letters: “Musical set at the Sleep-Tite factory.” I know that one thanks to Elaine and Rachel. A later giveaway, 64-Across, 15 letters: “Bavarian cream desserts.” I know that one from its Brooklyn, not Bavarian, incarnation. I’ve never thought of its plural, which sounds kinda ridic. The plural, that is, not my never having thought of it.
One clue that I especially liked for its mild misdirection: 51-Down, six letters: “Apollo headgear.” HELMET? No. And no spoilers: the answers are in the comments.

THEPAJAMAGAME. CHARLOTTERUSSES. LAUREL.
Google Books returns charlottes russe, charlotte russes, and charlottes russes. The Google Ngram Viewer returns charlotte russes alone. The city version of charlotte russe is a simple and wonderful treat.
Didn't get the russes, but Judy Holiday's face popped into view (in my mind) the instant I read Sleep-Tite. Fun movie.
Who would be the equivalent of Judy Holiday in today's movies, if such things were made any more?
I don’t think there’s anyone like Judy Holliday. She combined comedy and pathos and music in amazing ways. Bells Are Ringing: gosh, she was just great.
(But it’s Doris Day in The Pajama Game!)
Wasn't Judy in a musical about factory workers? Hmmm...guess it's Google-time for me!
I can’t find one, nor can I think of another musical about factory work. Let me know if you figure out what movie you’re thinking of.
I think my aging brain has mixed up actors and movies to the point I can't be sure. My memories start out whole, then go through the cuisinart (the generic) of my brain before reaching my fingers and/or larynx, so you likely have it straight.
I enjoyed both actresses work, but Judy seemed the natural at playing comic roles. Doris always seemed a bit self-conscious in hers.
Or, so I recall this morning. Is that an accurate assessment or another scrambling, I'll leave to you to decipher.
I'd agree about DD and JH. DD has always seemed to me someone more suited to silly TV shows.
You should see Elaine and me trying to figure out what actors we know from what movies, esp. with character actors. Oh! — he was in ....
I was bothered by the RUSSES because the dessert is a CHARLOTTE (in the Russian style) .....and I put off writing in RUSSES as long as I could. Rare easy Stumper!
Remember the Onion story about William Safire ordering Whoppers Junior?
