Farm-to-table

Farm-to-table in four, or three-plus-one:

FARM
FARE
TARE
TALE
TABLE
The addition of a letter makes this sequence a variation on what Vladimir Nabokov called “word golf.”

I turned on the computer because I'm re-reading Pale Fire and wanted to know which Sherlock Holmes story Shade refers to in the title poem. I figured I'd see what's new at OCA while I was logged on and I found word golf. What a funny and fun coincidence. (The answer, as I'm sure you know, is "The Final Problem.")

Great! But as for “As I’m sure you know”: well, not recently.

Nabokov has been sighted twice in the past three days in our house, in the pages of W.G. Sebald’s The Emigrants: a photograph of him with a butterfly net and later a reference to an unnamed man with a butterfly net in the vicinity of Ithaca, New York (Cornell!).
