Many of the faculty members who told The Chronicle they had retired or planned to retire earlier than anticipated expressed frustration with several aspects of their jobs. All of them, though, said AI loomed large in their decisions.Not everyone is willing to believe that AI will turn the university into “a super marvellous place.”
They described feeling overwhelmed by the task of trying to catch students who are cheating, or the prospect of having to completely redesign their courses. They were tired of trying to persuade students it was worth the effort not to farm out their assignments to an LLM, large language model. And they found themselves questioning the value of their own work. What is the point of teaching, they asked, if students no longer seem invested in learning?
I participate in the WordReference language forums and from what I understand the number of new threads has dropped by about 80% because people are using AI instead. And some of the threads that do get started say things like "AI is giving me two different answers; which is right?"
ReplyDeleteThere’s something so strange about going to AI first and then checking with a person. I like the idea of using Google minus AI, like so:
