Dolly Parton’s family requests, instead of flowers, donations to Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, a literacy initiative that provides a registered child with a book a month, from birth to the age of five.
Parton started the Imagination Library to honor her father, Robert Lee Parton Sr., who could neither read nor write. The program has given away more than 332 million books.

Someone I follow on Facebook posted a photo of herself reading to her then baby from one of the books. She talks about being poor at the time and, when told about the program, she wanted to know what proof of income she'd need, etc. She said the only requirement was to read to the child.
