Squareword

It’s like Wordle times five, or ten: Squareword. You guess five across-words, which also form five down-words. One play per day.

Wordle is forever hit or miss, but I think it’s possible to get better at Squareword.

[Speaking of hit or miss: I missed yesterday’s Wordle after getting stuck with _O_ER. BOXER? COVER? FOYER? JOKER? LOWER? No, HOMER.]

The squares didn’t come through, Joe. I wonder if these will:

I got today’s in 9, which is really good for me. I’m happy with 11 or under, though I’m often over.

Huh — it must be a matter of different operating systems.

When I previewed my comment, the squares showed. Weird. Good job with 9 guesses.

Good with 11 too.

I've been playing pretty consistently, and have mostly given up on Wordle. Through yesterday, with 61 plays, my average is 9.05, with the majority being between 8-10 guesses. I've been pleased to get it in 7 guesses 3x and once at 6 guesses. Thanks for discovering this game.

I’m averaging 10.13, with a handful of 7s. I think they’re less selective than Wordle about the words that appear, as with the fourth word across in today’s puzzle. Granted, it can be a common noun, not proper, but a pretty obscure one. I assume proper nouns aren’t allowed, but I might be wrong.

Do you have favorite starting guesses? On today's puzzle, my favorite first guess was one of the words, helping me solve in 7.

I always start with STARE. I usually try to guess a CH word after that.

Joe DiBiase said...

I used to start with SMEAR. I've switched to what happened to be the 3rd word today, followed by CLOUD.

My daughter, who studied linguistics, starts with CHAIR.

I decided on STARE by remembering “etaoin shrdlu,” the Linotype arrangement of most commonly used letters.
