Today’s Newsday Saturday Stumper is by Matthew Sewell, but it’s one of the easiest Stumpers I’ve done. (Just nineteen minutes.)
Some clue-and-answer pairs of note:
9-D, eight letters, “Displayed displeasure.” Does anyone ever do so outside of fiction?
18-A, nine letters, “They’re unqualified.” Clever.
21-D, three letters, “Her first husband (1956-1962) was a Japanese composer.” Instructive to see how the clueing of this name has changed over time.
23-A, thirteen letters, “Recipients of a trophy with a wand-wielding mouse arm.” Mouse arm, mouse arm ... what could it possibly be?
25-D, eleven letters, “Voluptuary’s way.” A fun clash of diction between clue and answer.
29-A, five letters, “Absurdist’s absentee.” Haven’t seen him around for a while.
35-A, seven letters, “Yarn piece.” I was baffled until I realized that the printed puzzle read yarn and not yam.
43-A, six letters, “Establishment on the water.” A nifty clue.
46-A, thirteen letters, “What skiers often leave behind.” Spoiler: Except perhaps in a Charles Addams cartoon.
46-D, five letters, “Cardinals’ double picks in 1978.” I thought Uh oh, baseball.
49-D, five letters, “Year-end stoop deliveries.” Dammit, why was my first thought of Amazon packages?
53-A, nine letters, “Prepared for parking, perhaps.” Sneaky. I was all set to put the car in reverse and start backing in.
57-D, three letters, “Welcome center.” You didn’t trick me, Matthew Sewell.
My favorite in this puzzle: 48-D, five letters, “Upended prybar.”
No spoilers; the answers are in the comments.
