Last week saw the fawn on the left take its first steps: when we were out for a walk, a driver pulled over to tell us that a deer had just given birth on a lawn a few yards ahead. We sped up, kept our distance, and saw the fawn sitting on the grass. And then — up, up, and away they went.
Two days later, another mother and child were walking through our backyard.
These are not fine photographs: the first is from quite a distance; the second is a screenshot from a video taken at a much greater distance.
[“Deers”: that’s the plural used by the very young.]

In Japan, for young adults, the plural of fruit is fruits. Makes sense. There is an anima series called fruits basket.
Totally makes sense. If you're learning to make plurals, you're following a rule you've intuited.
In Indonesian, plurals are created by simply saying the word twice. Deer deer.
Now that’s regularity in a language.
