Joe Smith, defense-plant worker, was in the hands of spies who took him for a ride — literally — before dumping him in the street. Joe was blindfolded all the while but stayed alert to the details of the drive: a dip in the road, tar strips, the sound of merry-go-round music. Maybe it came from that speaker above the entrance to Elias Canfield’s Radio Service. Look, there’s a number to call: ADams 9563.

[“Hey Gus, get that.” Yes, Gus, write it down. And don’t forget to pick up the new Artie Shaw record when you get the chance.]
Fortunately, there’s an all-night drugstore next door from which to call Elias Canfield.
[When was the last time you saw a sign reading “29¢”?]
[“Hello, Mr. Canfield? This is Captain Sherry.”]
“Oh sure, that horn’s goin’ all the time.” And a newspaper listing confirms the source of the music: The Merrymakers’ Merry-Go-Round was on KIH from 9:00 to 9:30. That’s Robert Young with the bandaged eye as Joe Smith. “You’re doin’ a swell job, Joe,” the cops tell him.
