In today’s Zippy, Zippy and Zerbina are watching television, warming themselves with old reruns.
“Seven channels” will click for anyone who grew up in the New York metropolitan area: 2 (WCBS), 4 (WNBC), 5 (WNEW), 7 (WABC), 9 (WOR), 11 (WPIX), and 13 (WNET). Were there other regions with seven channels?
I guess that the Zs’ TV doesn’t get UHF channels — there was once a world of weirdness there: Uncle Floyd, Walter Mercado, professional wrestling.

Chicago has/had five VHF channels (2, 5, 7, 9 and 11) and 5 or 6 UHF channels (20, 26, 32, 38, 44 and I think 66). I believe 20 is PBS from Northwest Indiana, which is more Chicago than Indiana, so I count the station as Chicago.
Elaine tells me that in Boston UHF channels were called “cable channels” (long before cable TV). I suspect that UHF channels were more common viewing in different markets. I remember Boston’s Channel 38 as something like a WOR or WPIX.
