A mail chute in the movies

[From Nazi Agent (dir. Jules Dassin, 1942). Click for a larger view.]

This mail chute filled the screen. The florid handwriting, which belongs to a courtly stamp and rare-book dealer, fits.

This post is for my friend Diane, who has quite a (virtual) collection of mail chutes from real life. Diane’s attention to mail chutes got me looking at them too.

Love mail chutes!

Many of the older business buildings in DC still have them but not sure if they are still used. They would be on the ground floor where you walked in from the street and could catch the elevator up. Most of them seemed to be located near the elevators.

Any movies with pneumatic tube systems that department stores used to have for payments?

I’m not sure about department stores, but here are some pneumatic movie tubes.

There was a mail chute next to the elevator in a college buildIng I frequented as an undergrad. I never noticed a collection box, which must have been in the basement.
