“Save the Country”

[Laura Nyro, “Save the Country” (Nyro). Kraft Music Hall Presents the Sound of the Sixties. NBC Television, January 15, 1969.]

A good national anthem, then or now. Especially now.

This video prompted me to read Nyro's Wikpedia page. I've been a fan since my sophomore year in college, but I never looked beyond "Eli and the Thirteenth Confession," somehow. (I originally knew her songs from that album in high school because the Fifth Dimension recorded them, but found her in college.)

I had no idea she was still recording and performing through the '90s! I thought she had died young... of drugs. Some of those songs - I assumed she was a heroin addict. Where did I get that idea from?

It amazes me that she was only 21 when Eli came out. I had no idea.

I somehow knew that she died young, of ovarian cancer. But I long forgot about her music after the Fifth Dimension era.

The production is sometimes too much for me, but the songs, the ones I know anyway, are so strong.
