Erle Dre



[It’s 10°F and feels like 9°. I’m just trying to entertain myself. This brief narrative has two inspirations. One: a friend who’s been reading Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler. The other: crosswordese.]

  1. Well, you have stumped me, Michael. There seems to be some constraint, perhaps having to do with the vowels, but I can't figure it out.

  2. It’s made with words and names that come up in crosswords, again and again: ERLE (as in Stanley Gardner), DRE (as in Dr.), and so on. All the conspicuous three- and four-letter words are from that pool, even NEHI.
