A city day: we dropped into a Trader Joe’s to pick up some items. Potato salad? Nope. Macaroni salad? “Nobody’s asked for that in” — and then the employee stopped herself. No, they didn’t have that. Just pasta salad.
From childhood’s hour, I’ve thought of cold cuts and potato salad as a gold standard for “lunch.” And various breads, Gulden’s mustard, and dill spears, please. And I’d settle for macaroni salad.
[The Trader Joe’s website shows packaged potato salad and several recipes. No sign of macaroni salad though. No one’s asked for that in years.]

Macaroni salad!
I was just blogging about a childhood reclamation project I seem to have launched--mostly around books--but it could include food too, and that would be included.
The food co-ops here do carry "Fog City Salad"––a fancy name for an old-fashioned macaroni salad with cubed cheddar cheese, peas, and mayo. I love it.
Fog City — new to me, both the city name and the salad name.
There must be room for old-fashioned foods. : )
Funny you should mention potato salad and macaroni salad. They were a summer staple growing up; cold cuts too. I had a hankering for those salads this summer, but the potato salads for sale in local groceries didn't meet my wife's standards, and macaroni salad was nowhere to be found here either. Luckily she took pity on me and made some great ones!
Nothing beats homemade. I make a mean potato salad when there's time. Don't get me started on cole slaw. : )
I should add: Elaine makes a great mustard-vinaigrette potato salad (with green beans added).
