This threw me for a moment as the Effingham I know is a tiny village in Surrey on the main road between Guildford and Leatherhead. I used to drive through it on my first "real" job (albeit only one in summer holidays from university).
I couldn't work out why it was featuring in your blog until I learned that there is another one in Illinois. I can only think that some Surrey folk were in the early immigrants to the US and so missed their former rural home that they were motivated to call some new place by the same name!
Wikipedia: “The community was named after General E. Effingham, a local surveyor.” Was General his first name? Dunno.
