“Effeminate”?

“He was a skinny high school student who had asthma, a high-pitched voice and effeminate mannerisms”: it’s a good story, in The New York Times.

But isn’t characterizing someone’s way of being as “effeminate” part of the problem to begin with?

As is characterizing a girl or woman as being masculine.

Exactly.

Try reading the entry in Wikipedia -- very interesting history behind the use even back to the Roman times.

But why would the NYT use the word to describe the person? It was mentioned only in the beginning and never referred to at all later in the article. There are better ways they could have said it. Bad editing!
