Yesterday I was standing in line at the drug store, which had big, very obvious red circles on the floor for social distancing. As I was waiting, an old man walked right up to me, stopping only about two feet behind me. “Boy,” he said, “I sure hope when winter comes this virus will get killed off.” “Let’s hope so,” I said, while intentionally keeping my (masked) face turned away. Finally it was my turn at the register, and I hurried away.
So while he was fully aware of the coronavirus (to his credit, he was wearing a mask), he had absolutely no concept of social distancing. Not to mention being apparently unaware that viruses (like the flu) usually thrive in winter, and don’t get killed off.
It is easy, I acknowledge, for people in ordinary circumstances to forget themselves. But when there are markers on the floor — sheesh. I have to hope that it will become more and more socially unacceptable for people not to mask and keep their distance.
That a college administrator did not realize that so many college students would behave in their normal way, with mass grouping whenever possible, indicates either willful ignorance or sheer incompetence on their part. Such administrators should be fired or at least made to live on campus or along routes the students take to parties and bars.
That last punishment would be especially fitting. As any number of observers have pointed out, plans for reopening campuses often look (and are now turning out to be) utterly delusional.
