An EXchange name sighting

[From Red Light (dir. Roy Del Ruth, 1949). Click for a larger view.]

I wonder whether anyone has ever before noticed that the listing for the Abbott Hotel is cut and pasted.

EXbrook was indeed a San Francisco exchange name. I have nothing on the Abbott Hotel, if it ever existed.

As it happens, soon I'm going to be house/cat- sitting on Abbott Ave.--I'm going to send this photo to the house owner.

I love spotting behind-the-scenes handwork. One of the pleasures of in-camera effects instead of the glossy CGI.

(Probably one day our current CGI capabilities will look laughably rough--I was watching a Harry Potter from the early 2000s, and the special effects looked a bit crude-- but you still won't be able to discern a *hand* at work in them.)

That would be "cut and pasted" in the dowdy sense.
