Your guys’s

We saw three people dressed for their prom strolling the aisles of Five Below, amusing themselves and others.

“I like your guys’s sense of fun,” I said. Pronounced /'gī-ziz/. I was surprised to hear myself saying that. But it fit the occasion.

I can relate: I've been known to say ya'lls.

I’ve also taken to saying “folks” — a habit I acquired when managing things for my mom. Much better on the phone than “you people.”

Years ago, during a presidential campaign speech, Ross Perot referred to the (mostly minority) audience as "you people." The reaction foreshadowed his election results. "You folks" may have worked better.

Oh, that sounds bad.

I think Barack Obama might have influenced my use of “folks.”
