Your guys’s

We saw three people dressed for their prom strolling the aisles of Five Below, amusing themselves and others.

“I like your guys’s sense of fun,” I said. Pronounced /'gī-ziz/. I was surprised to hear myself saying that. But it fit the occasion.

  1. I can relate: I've been known to say ya'lls.

  2. I’ve also taken to saying “folks” — a habit I acquired when managing things for my mom. Much better on the phone than “you people.”

  3. Years ago, during a presidential campaign speech, Ross Perot referred to the (mostly minority) audience as "you people." The reaction foreshadowed his election results. "You folks" may have worked better.

  4. Oh, that sounds bad.

I think Barack Obama might have influenced my use of “folks.”
