John P. Hammond (1942–2026)

Singer and guitarist. From The New York Times obituary: “Paul Robeson was his godfather, and the swing-era band leader Benny Goodman was his uncle by marriage. From a young age, he was entranced by the blues.”

i have several john hammond albums as well as otis spann and many of the early blues artists. so many of the great artists are disappearing leaving us with rather ticky tacky music that anyone can create.

It can be difficult to find the good stuff. I don’t know where I’d have gone musically if I hadn’t stumbled onto Pete Seeger’s Rainbow Quest (“educational television,” as it was then called) and the blues hours on WKCR-FM.
