Stephen Colbert played a clip last night in which Mikie Sherrill says New Jersey’s state motto has always stuck with her. She then asks her supporters if they know what it is.
Colbert: “Ooh, I know. It’s, uhm, ‘Twenty dollars of unleaded, please?’”
He then explained: New Jersey does not permit drivers to pump their own gas. Background here.
The real motto: “Liberty and Prosperity.” Though in my mind the state motto is not words but a noise: the honk that immediately sounds when a red light turns green, before the first driver stopped at the light has even had time to move forward.
