Hello fellow word nerds. In the novel of children playing in the ruins of the London blitz, An Episode of Sparrows, the term perambulators is used. By now, of course, everybody says pram for their strollers. Like how administrative assistants all say perm for a permanent wave. I wonder if folks know the first, full word? I was surprised, reading an old Ayn Rand novel, to see men in an office tower using an interoffice communicator.
I’m familiar with perambulator. But interoffice communicator for intercom? No.
