Un ours

[From Le jour se lève (dir. Marcel Carné, 1939). Click for a larger view.]

The bear and its reflection belonged to Françoise (Jacqueline Laurent) but now belong to François (Jean Gabin). The brooch is important too.

The American remake of Le jour se lève, The Long Night, has a bear of its own. See also the bear in The Beast Must Die.

A few years ago we made a visit to the New Museum in New York, where the feature was an exhibition by Ydessa Hendeles that consisted largely of thousands of period photographs of people and their teddy bears. It was a bit creepy and absolutely fascinating. https://yhaf.org/partners/the-teddy-bear-project.html

What a project, and with spiral staircases even. Thanks, Chris.
