Six friends

[Click for a much larger view.]

I took this photograph last week and forgot about it. Look closely and you’ll see four pairs of eyes, one eye from a figure caught in profile, one figure with back turned away from the camera, and some random lights across the way. Deer sometimes sleep in our backyard. We think that they think that it’s a friendly place, with reasonable rates.

Love that photo. I put up a couple of nesting boxes and filled feeders yesterday. Rituals that are especially important now, I think. — Heber

I never tire of seeing deer, as long as they're not stepping into the middle of the road as I'm driving. We've tried bird feeders, but our squirrels are far too wily.

Great photo, Michael. I run through a forest preserve in the wee hours and wear a headlamp. I always look into the woods as I pass. Sometimes the eyes resemble a string of spectators and sometimes they are clearly (some of them) asleep.

Nyger seed is more expensive but squirrels don’t like it. Finches, sparrows, wrens, juncoes, and nuthatches do. We also hung a small suet feeder from our pear tree: about 18 inches from the trunk and about 18 inches from the lowest branch. It’s hung with parachute rope, and I added a baffle. They try and try, but the squirrels can’t get it. The starlings are bullying the smaller birds and there is a cardinal couple flirting in the top branches. Deer and birds are always worth watching.

Sorry for the long comment. I’m out of breath.
