The simple check: drop in a pronoun. Her is going to be Speaker? Him is? They are? No. Whomever is? No.

TEACH it, teacher!
Keep in mind though that I’d never call attention to a glitch like that in everyday conversation. But I think it’s reasonable to expect more from professional commentators on the airwaves, especially when the mistake (or the hypercorrection) is so glaring.
