What does that say about his base? Is it that they and the Republicans have gone so far that they realise there's no way back?
I think that voters who had voted for Obama and now thought “What the hell”, can come back. True believers would have much greater difficulty. Virginia Heffernan has likened Trumpism, as she calls it, to a cult. Once you’re in, it’s very hard to think your way out.
