My head is about to explode. 'New research?'. Rudolph Flesch wrote _Why Johnny Can't Read_ about 75 YEARS ago, and while he was misguided about learning disabilities, he was right about reading instruction. I survived Dick, Jane, and Baby Sally, but only learned phonetics in my Senior yr of college....
ReplyDeleteI remember being mystified when we moved from Brooklyn to the NJ suburbs (sixth grade) and even but me knew what the schwa sound was. I knew how to read before starting school, but I didn’t really learn this stuff until I began doing literacy tutoring. I had just absorbed it, unconsciously.
