Rudolph Flesch wrote _Why Johnny Can't Read_ about 75 YEARS ago, and while he was misguided about learning disabilities, he was right about reading instruction. I survived Dick, Jane, and Baby Sally, but only learned phonetics in my Senior yr of college....

  2. I remember being mystified when we moved from Brooklyn to the NJ suburbs (sixth grade) and even but me knew what the schwa sound was. I knew how to read before starting school, but I didn’t really learn this stuff until I began doing literacy tutoring. I had just absorbed it, unconsciously.
