Overheard

“I only care about three things: the Catholic Church, swimming, and dancing. And I had to give them up”: Little Edie, Edith Bouvier Beale, in Grey Gardens (dir. Albert and David Maysles, 1975).

Why “overheard”? Because I was watching with only cursory attention. And having seen the film before, I didn’t watch to the end. I had to get out of that house.

I have watched Grey Gardens twice and always have the feeling that it's like watching a train wreck. You know what is coming but still can't turn away.

The two women to me are such characters and live with such abandonment as well as ignoring the raccoon in the house which would scare me.

Trivia: Sally Quinn and Ben Bradlee (Washington Post) bought the house in 1979. She sold it a few years ago after Bradlee died.

And putting out Wonder Bread for the raccoon. That’s when I had to get out. :)
