Indeed, it’s Carvel, not Dairy Queen, who can claim the Flying Saucer. So it must have been a Carvel stand that we walked to sometimes in summer. (Yes, it was.) I remember the Saucer’s cookie: like Masonite, without the cakey softness of the typical ice-cream sandwich cookie. Maybe the Flying Saucer cookie kept better in outer space.

Ha-ha. For the past several months, I've been telling colleagues about the great Dairy Queen near the office...only, it turns out, it's a Carvel. How could I have been so blind?
We had a Carvel here for decades that looked very similar to the one pictured. Eventually it was torn down and the franchise was moved a few hundred yards away to a nondescript storefront in a strip mall. I bet they're selling the same Flying Saucers, and I don't mean just the same recipe — I mean the same ones from fifty years ago. But what a part of my childhood...
