I have entered the New Yorker cartoon contest just three times, when a caption has immediately suggested itself to me. And three times, I have failed to make the cut. I prefer my caption for this cartoon to each of the three finalists: an ex-wife joke, a food joke, and a lawyer joke. (“Duck,” by the way, makes no sense if a cinderblock is falling toward someone’s head.)

Of the three finalists the lawyer joke is the best — except that it doesn't fit the body language of the two men. "And then it hit me" is a bit better. I actually like it with no caption at all.
I laughed out loud at your caption!
The others are so clunky, trying too hard to make a point.

P.S. Also, the caption should be SHORT---there's not a lot of time left...
I’d love to see what they had to choose from. For all I know, a thousand other people had my line. Here’s a piece with some background on how the contest works. Odd numbers: 5,000 people entering, 1,500 voting (as of 2013).
Of the finalists, I like "Duck" the best. It corresponds to the setting more than the others, and while merely ducking wouldn't save you from cinderblock, it's at least a little clever. All of them need editing. Yours is better.
I actually don't like the cartoon. :)
Gotta disagree about “Duck.” They’re in what looks like a coffeshop, with a counter and someone sitting on a stool by the window. “Duck” seems unlikely to me. If I had to choose from the three finalists, I’d choose “act of God,” but not with enthusiasm.
You should have won, Michael, but the system is obviously rigged - like the Republican nomination process.
I sometimes think that all systems are rigged. :)
