Saturday night deer-er

[Click for a much larger view.]

Not a great photograph — it was a really cold night, so I photographed through the storm door, and even with all the lights off, the additional light of the long exposure created that slight brightness on the left.

But it is a photograph with eleven deer. Count ’em: they’re all there. Our backyard has never been deer-er. Notice that our friends are looking in all directions: keeping everyone safe.

They left later that night, maybe to shoot pool, maybe to see a movie, maybe to just hang out elsewhere.

Should that not be deer-ier? Avoiding the clash with dearer? Although it now might clash with derrière…

I disagree—that is a great photograph.

I wanted the Saturday Night Fever flavor in the title. And when I thought about deer-ier I thought it disrespectful to our friends, some of whom have theirs facing the camera. So I settled on deer-er.

If it is a great photograph, all credit goes to the deer.

Okay, I'm outnumbered. Thank you both.

That is a lot of deer to have in a backyard. There's a place upstate from us that puts food out for deer in a big field, and they get dozens, but 3-5 is about the most I've ever seen at one time. We've had a bobcat hunting voles just behind us twice this week.

We have a shallow wooded creek at the edge of our property, which is something of a rapid-transit line for area deer. A neighbor once saw seventeen in our two yards. This is the most I've ever seen at once, after not seeing them for weeks. I'm a sentimentalist when it comes to these creatures, so I have to add that we've watched their fawns grow up.
