From Benjamin Dreyer, “5 Easy Pieces,” five ways to improve your writing in 2026.
In December Dreyer offered forty-nine observations about writing to close out the year. For instance: “Please stop being afraid of semicolons.”

I like this idea and have NEVER done it—have you?
“ Read your work aloud before declaring it over and done with. No, don’t pretend to read it aloud. Make some actual noise.”
Sometimes my writing is too preachy for my liking, but I’m not always sure where the line is – –
I expect if I read it aloud, I would hear me crossing it.
It's always helpful. I'm trying like crazy to avoid typos in blog posts this year, and reading aloud helps. Not writing in the blogger HTML window helps too.
