Lisa Needham, at Public Notice:
The Trump administration’s war on cities just entered a new, more terrifying phase. What stage of fascism is it when the president defies a court order and sends troops into a city anyway? Because as of Sunday, that’s where we’re at.Tina Kotek, governor of Oregon:
When the president and I spoke yesterday [September 27], I told him in plain language that there is no insurrection or threat to public safety that necessitates military intervention in Portland or any other city in our state. Despite this — and all evidence to the contrary — he has chosen to disregard Oregonians’ safety and ability to govern ourselves. This is not necessary. And it is unlawful. And it will make Oregonians less safe....JB Pritzker, governor of Illinois:
Oregon is our home — not a military target.
This evening [October 5], President Trump is ordering 400 members of the Texas National Guard for deployments to Illinois, Oregon, and other locations within the United States. No officials from the federal government called me directly to discuss or coordinate. And for the delusional thinking that prompts these efforts: “Am I watching things on television that are different from what’s happening?” (Press Watch ).
We must now start calling this what it is: Trump’s Invasion. It started with federal agents, it will soon include deploying federalized members of the Illinois National Guard against our wishes, and it will now involve sending in another state’s military troops.
I call on Governor Abbott to immediately withdraw any support for this decision and refuse to coordinate. There is no reason a President should send military troops into a sovereign state without their knowledge, consent, or cooperation.
The brave men and women who serve in our national guards must not be used as political props. This is a moment where every American must speak up and help stop this madness.
