April 13: An intrepid reader sussed out the location:

[85 Warren Street, Manhattan, c. 1939–1941. From the NYC Municipal Archives Collections. Click for a much larger view.]

The repeated -ket turns out to be part of STEAMER BASKETS. Steamer baskets were baskets of fruit given as gifts to those going on an ocean voyage. Down at the tip of Manhattan, close to the water’s edge, Peters Market was well-placed to sell steamer baskets.

Many thanks to the intrepid reader who made shared this find.

a guess on cluster bar is a costume jewelry pin?
looks almost like "farmer's market"

Could be! I was puzzled by -ket, or what looks like -ket, reappearing in the bottom line on the window.

spotted an ad, looks like "no colds for me" and "kills colds"???

Is that the piece of paper taped to the window? I tried flipping it and changing the contrast but I couldn’t make out the text.

one definition of steamer baskets are the fruit baskets delivered to departing steamship voyagers

Holy smokes! I will add that photo to the post when I’m in front of my Mac. (Impossible to manage on a phone.)

warren street is right by the piers, so i guess it was that type of steamer basket, rather than for cooking vegetables, etc.. maybe they threw in a candy bar too????????

Michael Leddy said...

Yes, I saw that in Google Maps. Maybe some candy for the kiddies.

A lost world of commerce.

The hats on the guys crossing the street are a bonus.
