Then there’s the confusion between Richard Burton, actor and Richard Burton, 19th century adventurer.

I didn’t think of that Burton, though I vaguely know his name.

Although one might apply this melancholy to Richard Burton, the actor. Years ago, I saw a film about him. If I remember correctly he was a voracious reader and often traveled with a trunk of books. He was also eidetic and at one point began speaking on stage what he had read which, of course, threw the rest of the actors off,

He was always one of my favorites with an incredible voice and presence.

I was reading a little about him this morning — so gifted, and so many demons.

About a month ago I watched two interviews with Richard Burton spaced about 5 years apart.

One was an interview in his home town in Wales in which he was vibrant and engaged with the interveiewer and eager to talk about all subjects.

The second was a two show set of interviews with Dick Cavett from the early ‘80s. He was subsued, reticent, and seemed a bit uncomfortable talking about subjects. Cavett had to really coax things out of Burton. It’s not that Burton seemed to dislike Cavett it’s just he seemed gaunt and “off”.

The Cavett must be these two hours?

Yes for the Cavett.
