Daniel Kane found an exchange of letters between John Ashbery and Julia Child. Fantastic.

[“He’s a poet who enjoys cooking” sounds to me like an introduction from The Dating Game.]

By coincidence, my only conversational scrap with John Ashberry was also about food. After a reading, in Louisville, in line for the snacks, he asked about Benedictine, a much beloved Kentucky cucumber-cream cheese sauce. He said, is that Benedictine? I said, I believe it's garlic dip.
I never knew he was dedicated to cooking. But there it is, in a description of his kitchen: “a large collection of cookbooks and cooking equipment.”
