[1987.]
Our daughter hits the big three-oh later today. Man, she’s getting up there. Then again, age ain’t nothing but a number. Whoops — I’ve run out of clichés.
I still vividly remember taking this photograph in the house we were renting when Rachel was born. The curtains were homemade (Elaine’s). The camera was a Canon (Elaine’s). Rachel was toddling by our bedroom window, and I took this photograph without (as Elaine reminds me) knowing anything about how to take a photograph. Lucky dad.
Happy birthday, RR.

Reminds me of the Dutch painters who harnessed prevailing light to create their masterpieces.
I don't think that portrait was an accident. I think it was the loving eye of the photographer, her father, who transferred it to the camera.
Regardless, Happy Birthday, Rachel-beautiful-daughter!
Aww — well, thank you. Elaine said this morning that it made her think of Vermeer — no kidding.
That's whose name I couldn't think of fast enough when I was typing the response above! All I could remember was The Girl with the Pearl earring. She and Rachel have that same glow about them, but Rachel looks a lot happier in her portrait. I agree with Elaine.
Yes, a lot happier. All children should have the right to smile in good light. (I’m thinking about everyone who’s just been told Do Not Enter.)
How great! And, she just could not have been any cuter! (There's another cliché for the set! )
Cute as a button! Autocorrect suggested “as a baby.”
30 years ago, you became parents for the first time! Thank you for the birthday wishes, Dad...not the mention the birthday!
De rien, dotter.
And though she be but little, she is fiery. (At least her hair is!)
Happy Birthday, Rachel!
It’s trick lighting! I’ll make sure Rachel sees your comment.
