Mayberry and kinship networks

From The Andy Griffith Show episode “A Date for Gomer,” November 25, 1963. Opie asks a question:

“Is this the first time you’ve been out with a girl, Gomer?“

“Do cousins count?”

I'm not sure that's as weird a reference as it sounds. Yeah, I know there are jokes about it in certain areas, but I can imagine someone without a date bringing a cousin just to go. Me, I just stayed home. :)

I think it’s pretty harmless. But I’m surprised that no one thought otherwise.
