The invoice that came in yesterday’s mail marks the end of one era and the beginning of another: our garbage service has, finally, abandoned its dot-matrix printer and tractor-feed perforated forms for a laser printer and shiny multi-color forms.

End of a garbage era

When I was kid we put out the “ash cans” despite not having any coal-fired stove or furnace.
Now there’s a hand-me-down word.
For that matter I believe we also took out the "rubbish".
Nothing but garbage in my upbringing. Elaine says that kids and teachers in her elementary school referred to "the ashcan." My granddaughters refer to "the trash truck."
On garbage day we take out the trash, the recycling and the compost.
Sometimes I put "garbage" in what we call the "recycling" can, which is next to the compost under the sink, because I am too lazy to go walking down the hall to the bathroom "garbage" can. (Also because in my city "recycling" is a farce)
In Britain they say dustbins, while in London they do like in New York City, by putting bags, not cans, on the front sidewalk.
