Noisy macOS, noisy iOS

Did you know that you can get distraction-covering noise from macOS (Ventura and above) and iOS (15 and above)?

In MacOS, go to System Settings > Accessibility > Audio > Background Sounds.

In iOS, go to Settings > Accessibility > Audio & Visual > Background Sounds.

You’ll find the same choices for each: Balanced, Bright, and Dark Noise; and Ocean, Rain, Stream, Night, and Fire. That’s a campfire — no sirens.

In macOS, you can add Background Sounds access to the Menu Bar or Control Center. Go to System Settings > Control Center > Hearing and and choose Show in Menu Bar or Show in Control Center. In iOS, adding a button to the Control Center offers similar ease.

I’ve used a variety of noisemakers on Macs. And a dozen years ago, I relied on an hour-long .mp3 of pink noise. I will quote myself from my teaching days: “Without pink noise, I’d get nothing done in my office.” Times change. The need for noise remains.

I think I can write in silence, as when a cafe radio is turned off, but I know that I just loving writing during live music or open mic nights (where they all know I write, without being offended, and I always clap for each performer)

In my student days I absolutely couldn't stand a plain study carol. I would always study in the campus bar or food court where I could periodically raise my head and see stuff. I didn't need uninterrupted concentration because I was an oral learner: I would constantly stop to talk to myself to understand what I was doing.

The only music I’ve ever been able to work to is François Couperin, as played by Angela Hewitt. No diss to the composer or performer! Somehow it helps my concentration. Anything else and the music takes over.

You might like knowing that are apps and/or websites that offer coffeehouse sounds. One example: https://coffitivity.com/ .

Thank you for the link. I played it as a bustled around and shaved. Strange to have people just down the hall as I shave. And when I was tempted to ease into the rabbit hole of the Internet, well I couldn't do both sites at once. So I kept the sound on, didn't get into wasting time, and got out of the house in a timely manner.

Ha! That must be a side-effect the developer wasn’t counting on.
