Unique Original Pretzel “Splits”

I found Unique Original Pretzel “Splits,” complete with quotation marks, in the local natural-foods store. Yes, an impulse purchase. They’re great pretzels, made of unbleached wheat flour, canola oil, salt, yeast, and soda. They’re pretzels of substance.

I will offer an analogy:

ordinary pretzels : “Splits” :: cardboard box : log cabin.

The company’s website: Unique Pretzel Store.

[Snyder’s is another great Pennsylvania name in pretzels. What is it about pretzels and Pennsylvania? Is it more than mere alliteration? Yes. Wikipedia explains.]

Without going to Wikipedia, am going to guess pretzels have something to do with Pennsylvania's concentration of German descendants.

That’s it.

My Pennsylvania cousin, with his and her very Irish last names, are planning their pork and sauerkraut as we speak . . .

I'm from SE PA and I guess I take the ubiquity of all types of pretzels in our grocery stores for granted. That said, the Unique "Splits" are one of my favorites. Another great pretzel is the hand-twisted Hammonds from Lancaster PA. Available by mail order but worth a road trip to the "factory" (a brick twin home) if you're in the area. They take a brown bag and fill it for you on a scale for however much you want.

Thanks for the recommendation. I see from the website that these pretzels can even be had in an orange can.
