"You gotta get up in the morning"

Spike Lee averages almost a movie a year. From "Outside Man," a September 22, 2008 New Yorker profile by John Colapinto:

He is able to accomplish so much in part because he often rises at 5 A.M. "You want to get a lot done, you gotta get up in the morning," he told me. The rest, he says, is "time management."

Why doesn't it work just to stay up as late as you need to -- no matter what time you get up? Maybe early birds get worms, but I've had those before, and I'm not a big fan.

This post reminded me of a few things: (1) Daily Routines, a blog devoted to "How writers, artists, and other interesting people organize their days" that's become a fast favorite of mine; (2) that I still need to see Lee's Miracle at St. Anna; and (3) that getting up early might not be all it's cracked up to be.

Bret, I like the no-nonsense certainty in Spike Lee's advice, but I can't say that I've been putting it into practice over the winter break.

Thanks for sharing the links, Matt. I like Daily Routines too.
