I will start doing like you for this word. Years ago, I gave up on learning to speak Esperanto because of the gendered words, such as teacher and teacher-ess.

Susanne Pleshette?

It’s Suzanne Pleshette in her second screen appearance, as Wendy Jenkins in the Decoy episode “The Sound of Tears” (April 14, 1958). Decoy was the first television series to focus on a policewoman. Beverly Garland (later of My Three Sons) played Patricia “Casey” Jones, who almost always went undercover to crack a case. Among the actors showing up in individual episodes: Martin Balsam, Peter Falk, Zohra Lampert, and Lois Nettleton.

I know that many female performers prefer actress, but it sometimes sounds as antique to me as authoress.

For whatever reason or reasons, the Google Ngram Viewer shows actress sharply declining from about 2013.

So The Birds wasn't her first big appearance? Such a beautiful woman. I always thought she was a little too attractive to play Bob Newhart's wife, but he probably had a hand in casting her. Smart man. He didn't do so bad with Mary Frann, either.

Check out her IMDb page: there were many TV appearances before she was in movies. And she's one of the many actors to appear in both Naked City and Route 66.
