A diner, found by chance.
[1867 Westchester Avenue, Bronx, c. 1939–1941. From the NYC Municipal Archives Collections. Click for a much larger view.]
Notice too the Silvercup truck and the giantess peeking out from behind. This photograph makes me think of a John Baeder painting.
Today, “Metro Diner” is the name of a Manhattan establishment at 100th and Broadway. It’s also the name of a chain of restaurants featured on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives .

That's a great one
A lucky find.
the other tax photo shows another neon sign on the side of the diner
Yes: https://nycrecords.access.preservica.com/uncategorized/IO_2cecf60b-81c5-4a3a-84d4-b92e7268327a/. It must have looked beautiful at night. I started with that photo, but then thought the alternate was much more painterly, even with the rectangle marring it.
