Take me out of the ballgame

[Click for a larger, sadder view.]

This what-was-a-baseball is a recent addition to the gravel in front of a butterfly sanctuary where Elaine and I sometimes walk.

Are you now wondering, as I was, what’s really inside a baseball?

Sorry for the spasm of comments, but this picture reminds me of the first time I stepped onto a Little League diamond. My mom signed me up when we moved to a new town, but the season was already underway, and so the starters were scrimmaging when we arrived. Everyone was huddled around the plate buzzing about something.

It turns out that this red-headed kid (maybe the son of a coach?) hit a ball so hard that the cover split at the seams. The ball’s carcass was at the plate, but the innards went over the fence. Full-grown men marveled.

It was a Little League practice, so the ball was probably worn, but I remember it pretty vividly 50 years later.

No need to ever apologize for comments, Stefan. The blog-o-sphere needs more such sharing.

Now you've made me curious about whether a ball has ever been destroyed by a hitter in MLB. Must investigate.

It’s happened often enough that no one seems sure how often. This article seems pretty thorough:

Thanks, Stefan. I was so addled by ROBOTUMPIRE in this morning's crossword that I forgot about the baseballs. I liked the throw to first with the ball flopping on the field.
