Orange Crate Art turns twenty-one today. Here’s what I wrote in a first nervous post after dinner on September 15, 2004:
“If you’re going to be this uptight and worried about it, you’re not going to be a very happy blogger. Just say ‘This is my new blog; I’m trying it out. Thanks to my son and daughter. I hope it works out.’”It still is.
Good advice.
This is my new blog. Thanks to Rachel and Ben for getting me started (and to Rachel for telling me what to say).
“Orange Crate Art,” by the way, is the title song of a 1995 album by Van Dyke Parks and Brian Wilson. The song was my introduction to each man’s music and is, to my mind, one of the great American songs.
Writing here gives me great pleasure, and it’s led to all sorts of unforeseen goodness in my life. Thanks to everyone who reads.

Two words. Happy Birthday.
21, my gosh! Happy birthday, champ!
Thanks, Kevin. Thanks, Pat.
Happy birthday!
Also, nice that you stuck with it: According to a manager, Scott Berkun, at the other big web host, Wordpress, in his book "My Year Without Pants," many people will set up their blog template but not post, or post just once and never again.
Thanks, Sean. I read somewhere, years ago, that the average lifespan for a blog is three months. So people like us are breakng the curve.
Congratulations! Here's to many more.
Thanks, Jim.
I wonder, what unforeseen goodness?
I know that reading your blog your blog has led me to ….
Tweezerman tweezers; “some rocks”;
enough nuggets of Proust I can say, “I’ve read Proust; bearable (just) nuggets of news; the deelights of the4-sentence movie reviews; and friendship beyond the grave with Aldo… and friendship this side of the grave—even paper letters with stamps and Mr Zip!
And much, much more I’m grateful for.
Thank you.
Unforseen goodness — too many forms to even try to count, but especially friendships. More abstractly, the constant impetus to pay attention to, well, whatever.
Exactly—paying attention.
From your side-bar,
“Attention is the rarest and purest form of generosity.”
Come to think of it, it's from your blog that I am going though a phase of having two subscriptions: Inside Higher Ed and The Point.
I've linked to IHE many times. But I think The Point might come from elsewhere.
Happy Belated Birthday! I check OCA and my GoComics every Sunday morning so I missed the big day. Congratulations on still finding enjoyment in sharing all the things that have sparked our own interest in these things: notebooks, pencils, character actors, movie reviews, tax photos, Mac stuff, writing, reading, and the screaming nightmare that is the passing scene. Keep on keeping on!
Thanks, Mike. You’re in my RSS, always, and guess what? — I’m heading to the post office for Chris Ware stamps today.
Screaming nightmares always come to an end, right? :)
