Shelley Winters
The only really square-jawed old-timey actress I can think of is Eve Arden.
Shelly Winters?
In the choice between "actor" and "actress," I'd choose the one that gives added meaning. For a unisex name such as Dylan, for example, "the actress Dylan Thomas" can provide helpful context. There are other contexts in which knowing the actor's sex is useful. Just my two cents.

Yes, it’s Shelley Winters, as Hazel, the new cashier, in The Gangster (dir. Gordon Wiles, 1947). She has some brief bits of dialogue with Akim Tamiroff, owner of the soda fountain.
The point about added information is a good one, but there might be other ways to add — say, with a pronoun. With words like poetess being passé, I think it’s easy to give up actress. But many actresses are strong proponents of the word.
