The Great War ended on November 11, 1918. Armistice Day was observed the next year. In the United Kingdom Armistice Day is now Remembrance Day. In the United States, Armistice Day is now Veterans Day.

No paywall problem — and it taught me a lot. I cringed this morning when I read Trump’s “Happy Veterans Day,” and now there’s even more reason to cringe.
To my parents, it was "Armistice Day (and "Decoration Day"). Nothing happy about either.
